Harvey Goldstein of Indonesia has had a long career in finance, civic leadership, and philanthropy. The founder of Harvest International and co-founder of Manchester Group Ltd, Harvey Goldstein’s Singapore investment work has not kept him from donating substantially to the Johns Hopkins University Centre for Talented Youth.

Dedicated to nurturing young talent, the John Hopkins Center for Talented Youth offers various scholarships to exemplary students such as the John Hopkins CTY Scholarship.

The CTY scholarship was created in 2004 to help smart underprivileged 8th-graders from poor backgrounds or traditionally unrepresented groups get an affordable education. The scholarship provides tuition for both the summer and the year-round programs.

The scholarship readies the students for top performance in their classwork and for future leadership roles through participation in intensive summer programs, mentoring programs, and distance education courses.

To be eligible for the CTY scholarship, candidates must have good SAT/ACT scores. Besides the SAT/ACT exams, students must come from a low-income household, and live in a geographic area selected by donors.

Singapore-based Harvey Goldstein serves as the chairman of Harvest International, Inc., in Indonesia, where he also serves as the managing director of Business-Link Consultancy PTE LTD. Previously, Harvey Goldstein served as a founding shareholder and director for Resources Management International, Inc., a company based in Southeast Asia that provides training and management in developing countries in the region, including Indonesia.

Located equatorially between the Indian and Pacific Oceans, Indonesia is an archipelago of 17,508 islands and the fourth most populated country in the world. The largest islands in the archipelago are Sumatra, Java, Sulawesi, Kalimantan, and the Indonesian section of New Guinea known as Papua. The island of Java has the nation’s most clustered population, forcing the Indonesian government to instill a transmigration policy to correct the uneven distribution. As part of a developing region, Indonesia has progressed substantially in recent years, with its economy and morale having been lifted from previous struggles. Gas and oil exports aid the economy, but this boost is also partially due to tourism, as Indonesia is the second most biodiverse nation in the world and contains thousands of varieties of flora and fauna.

Nimbus Satellites Paved the Way for Future Weather Data Collection

As the chairman of Harvest International, Inc., Harvey Goldstein has worked to help the company thrive for nearly three decades. Prior to this role, Harvey Goldstein served as a director for Resources Management International, Inc., a technology management and training firm based in Indonesia that offers its services to developing Southeast Asian countries. Before beginning his admirable career in business, Harvey Goldstein worked in scientific research and engineering and developed a testing facility for NASA's Nimbus satellites.

The Nimbus program launched in 1964 as a means to monitor and observe weather and atmospheric conditions around the clock. The satellites were equipped with microwave and infrared radiometers, Coastal Zone Color Scanners, and ozone mappers to provide global data on the Earth's ice and sea coverage and atmospheric chemistry, temperatures, and radiation levels. The series of satellites included Nimbus 1, Nimbus B, and Nimbus models 4 through 7 weather satellites with objectives like monitoring pollutants, measuring water vapor, analyzing the ozone layer, and aiding in weather analysis. Nimbus satellites are no longer in use, but the satellites paved the way for the modern technology used to collect data on weather patterns and atmospheric conditions.

The Achievements of Some Johns Hopkins CTY Students

In his capacity as president of Harvest International, Harvey Goldstein has overseen the provision of advisory services to companies and foreign investors interested in doing business in Indonesia. His business and advisory efforts have extended beyond Indonesia to Southeast Asia, more broadly speaking. Harvey Goldstein chairs the Southeast Asia Advisory Board of Johns Hopkins University’s Center for Talented Youth (CTY). In 2013, he and his wife established a scholarship fund that has enabled students from Singapore to attend CTY programs.

In the late 1970s, the CTY was established. The organization nurtures the talents of younger people through various programs, and by providing them with various services and resources. Leading visionaries, such as the creator of Facebook and a co-founder of Google, were CTY students.

Another CTY student, Megan Sims, wrote a regular column in the Dallas Morning News, a paper with a readership of over 250,000, while still a sophomore in high school. The response to her bimonthly column was positive.

Milad Pooran, another former student of CTY, who was enrolled in the advanced math program, has gone on to give exemplary service as a combat medic with the National Guard. An immigrant from Iran, he is a seasoned physician who has also had the opportunity to conduct research on HIV at the National Institutes of Health.
