Harvey Goldstein, business, philanthropist, and civic leader in Singapore, Indonesia, and throughout Southeast Asia, has a long history in the field of education. Harvey Goldstein was a professor of computer science early in his career, while advancing his career in applied research. Subsequently he founded businesses in Indonesia that draw foreign investment and spurred private sector growth. However, he keeps his hand in education by serving as chairman of the Southeast Asia Advisory Group of the Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth (CTY).

Founded in 1979 at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, CTY seeks to recognize and develop the world’s brightest minds. CTY achieves its mission through an annual talent search, and by offering a slate of challenging academic courses via on-site summer programs and online distance learning programs.

CTY conducts its talent search for academically gifted students in grades K-12 through its website, cty.jhu.edu. Parents use resources available at the site to apply for enrollment and to arrange for testing. Students must attain high scores on academic assessment tests to be eligible for enrollment.

CTY provides summer programs at its academic center on the Johns Hopkins University campus and at other East and West Coast college campuses in the United States, as well as in Hong Kong. Summer programs include residential and day programs of varying lengths for students at different grade levels. Courses are offered in the humanities, science, math and computer science, and writing. Programs are open to international students and to American students living abroad.

CTY provides online distance learning programs year-round. Courses in computer technology, engineering, world languages, writing, mathematics, music, and science are offered. Eligibility criteria apply.

CTY also offers family academic programs, in which students and their parents participate in learning experiences, including visits to museums and hands-on activities. For family programs, minimum qualifying test scores are not required.

Indonesia-based businessman Harvey Goldstein, chairman of the Southeast Asia Advisory Group of the Johns Hopkins University Center for Talented Youth (CTY), spearheads the advisory group’s efforts in supporting CTY and its programs through philanthropic, promotional, and fundraising endeavors. Harvey Goldstein, through his personal philanthropy, also funds scholarships to CTY programs for students who reside in Singapore.

Students must demonstrate financial need and academic ability to be eligible for CTY programs, which were established by Johns Hopkins University in 1979. CTY works to identify talented K-12 students worldwide and help them achieve their potential with challenging course work in math, science, computer science, and the humanities.

Mr. Goldstein told the Singapore publication The Straits Times that he funded scholarships to invest in the future of Singapore. Scholarships paid tuition, room and board, and round-trip air fare for students who attended CTY programs in the United States.

A prominent businessman and long-time civic leader and philanthropist in Singapore and Indonesia, Mr. Goldstein spent his almost 50-year career in Southeast Asia, where he works to attract foreign direct investment and promote development. Mr. Goldstein said that CTY programs give students international exposure, which could help them become business leaders, scientists, engineers, etc and, in turn, draw additional international business to Singapore.
